On June 9, Yellowstone National Park confirmed its first wildland fire of the season.
The Milepost 17 Fire was located by a motorist on U.S. Highway 191 while driving 17 miles north of West Yellowstone. The 0.1-acre fire was ignited by lightning and torched a single tree. Yellowstone wildland firefighters suppressed the fire on June 9 and 10.
According to a press release, the parkwide fire danger level for Yellowstone is LOW. While there are no fire restrictions in place or planned in the park, the National Park Service reminded visitors that campfires must always be attended, and are only permitted within established fire rings in campgrounds and some backcountry campsites. Fires should be cold to the touch before abandoning.
