High-elevation regions of southwest Montana are expecting six to 14 inches of snow as the season’s first winter storm warning approaches the region.
According to the National Weather Service of Great Falls, a winter storm warning is in effect between 3 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 through noon Friday. Gallatin and Madison county mountain ranges and the Centennial Mountains, including Big Sky, West Yellowstone, Targhee Pass and Raynolds Pass can expect heavy snow with total snow accumulations up to six inches below 7,000 feet and six to 14 inches above 7,000 feet. Winds are forecasted to gust as high as 35 miles per hour.
The storm could make travel difficult and tire chains may be required in some areas. Hunters, especially those in the Gallatin, Gravelly and Madison Ranges and Tobacco Root Mountains, should be prepared for winter conditions in the backcountry.
