As the temperatures warm up across southwest Montana after a weekend of heavy snow, the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center and Bridger Ski Foundation have released a wet avalanche warning for Sourdough Canyon. The popular trail south of Bozeman is frequented by hikers and cross-country skiers.
“Starting Friday afternoon, we have a series of warm days and a mix of sun and clouds,” stated a Feb. 20 Facebook post by BSF. “While we are unsure about the exact timing and certainty of wet snow avalanches impacting the Sourdough Trail, they should be on your radar Friday afternoon through the weekend.”
GNFAC issued an explanation of what happens when the sun warms snowpack, particularly after a stretch of cloudy days in a recent video. Before heading out, BSF and GNFAC recommend checking their avalanche forecast for the most up-to-date information.
