Dr. Michael Reidy, chair of the Montana State University Department of History and Philosophy will explore how mountaineering has transformed science on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m at the Museum of the Rockies.
The presentation is part of the 2024 Science Inquiry Series which is free and open to the public and addresses cutting edge scientific developments and what they mean for society. Each lecture is free and open to the public.
“In his presentation, titled ‘Science at High Altitude,’ Reidy, a historian of science, will discuss how the advent of mountaineering in the nineteenth century helped direct the sciences of evolution, geology, and meteorology by turning mountains into vertical laboratories,” a press release from Gallatin Valley Friends of the Sciences stated.
Reidy will also explain how the current relationship between mountaineering and science impacts the study of ecology, high altitude physiology and climate science. According to the release, Reidy will provide examples on how “how MSU and the Bozeman community are contributing to exciting developments.”
Attendees can ask their questions at the end of the presentation.
Dr. Reidy holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and his current research is about how mountaineering has transformed science in the 19th century. “He is the author or co-author of several books and is the General Editor of a project to publish the correspondence of 19th century mountaineering physicist John Tyndall,” the release stated.
The Science Inquiry Series is sponsored by the Gallatin Valley Friends of the Sciences, Hopa Mountain and hosted by the Museum of the Rockies.
Jen Clancey is the Staff Writer for Explore Big Sky.
