BIG SKY – Do you know the difference between difference and deference? Do misplaced modifiers upset you? Can you explain the significance of “its” versus “it’s?” Are you looking for writing experience through a rigorous internship? Then keep reading.
The Outlaw Partners, publisher of the Explore Big Sky newspaper and Mountain Outlaw magazine, is seeking strong candidates for an unpaid editorial internship beginning in September. Some past interns have been offered full-time employment at the company, and some have moved on to writing positions with Utah’s Salt Lake Tribune and Minnesota’s Owatonna People’s Press, among others.
Matt Hudson, who interned for Outlaw in summer 2013 and now covers politics, education and art for the People’s Press, says the variety of opportunities as an Outlaw intern prepared him for his current reporting job.
“Assigned stories are good, but it’s good to have freedom as well,” said Hudson, who earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Montana in May. “I was able to pursue stories I had developed on my own and being able to write all the time is what you need to do.”
With in-house video, design and sales, Outlaw also offers interns a chance to work closely with other departments to gain a broad multimedia experience, and encourages their involvement in the overall editorial process.
Interns must have strong writing skills and be organized, enthusiastic, hard working and able to commit approximately 20 hours per week.
Duties include pitching, reporting, researching and writing news articles and features; posting on explorebigsky.com and social media sites; photography; editing, fact checking and revising other contributors’ work for grammar, content, style and accuracy; and assisting the design and editorial teams with other duties as they arise.
Explore Big Sky is a full-color, local and regional news and lifestyle publication, produced and distributed every two weeks throughout southwest Montana. Mountain Outlaw magazine is a vivid, full-color glossy magazine exploring life, land and culture in the Yellowstone region and beyond. Published twice a year, it features world-class photography and high-quality editorial content. Daily news updates, publication archives and other online resources are available on explorebigsky.com.
Outlaw Partners was named one of Outside Magazine’s Best Places to Work in 2012 and 2013, and has garnered numerous awards for editorial work, videography, design and advertising.
