Mild and windy weather made for tough hunting conditions the past two weeks in Southwest Montana. All game check stations in Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 3 reported another slow weekend with fewer hunters than the season opener.
Overall, about 5 percent of the 1,320 hunters who passed through the region’s six game-check stations this past weekend had harvested a deer or an elk. In all, 34 elk, 24 mule deer and eight white-tailed deer were taken.
Hunters out of Livingston had the most success with a better than 16 percent harvest rate. Seven elk, 11 mule deer and three white-tailed deer came through the check station.
FWP talked with about 450 hunters at the Silver City check station near Helena, the most in the region. Those hunters harvested eight elk, four mule deer, and one whitetail.
