Outlaw pubs are catching on

By Emily Wolfe Explore Big Sky Managing Editor/Distribution Assistant

Rosauers grocery store devours the Explore Big Sky newspaper.

So does the Big Sky Post Office. And Second Wind Sports, Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, the Big Sky Resort Mountain Mall, Sportsman’s Warehouse, the Bozeman Co-op and The Gusher Pizza and Sandwich Shoppe in West Yellowstone.

I know.

E.J. Daws and I have been standing in while Outlaw’s distribution director Tyler Allen blanketed Jackson, Wyo. with the winter issue of our magazine, Mountain Outlaw, and E.J. and I can hardly keep up with our hungry readers.

It made me think we must be doing something right, so I started asking folks why they’re picking up the paper.

“I want to know what’s going on in Big Sky, because what happens there matters to all of us in Gallatin County,” said Angie Neilson, buyer and merchandiser for the gift shop at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone. “There are always amazing things going on, I always say ‘I wish we had a little of Big Sky here.’ I’ve seen Big Sky change, like West had changed for the better.”

Another, Pam Broome, of Bozeman, says she enjoys reading Explore Big Sky for a couple of reasons.

“There’s a great range and depth to the various articles provided, with many opportunities to learn new information about businesses, sports activities, and the people living in our community; and, I always look forward to learning about up coming community events being hosted in Big Sky and Bozeman.”

Being on stands for two weeks, we’re interested in stories that last. This, as Broome mentioned, means taking an in-depth look at issues, people and places; engaging photography; and events.

Currently in our editorial wheelhouse are pieces on the coal industry, ice climbing in Hyalite Canyon, housing issues in Big Sky, an innovative educational conference in Manhattan, and Museum of the Rockies’ Yellowstone exhibit – among many, many others.

All of these stories relate directly to Big Sky, Bozeman and West Yellowstone – our core readership. We know our readers are interested in local and regional news, and we are here to catch it.
