Gear review: Dakine Ace pants

Dakine outdid itself with the Ace two-layer, insulated pants. I would know. I was the one getting pelted with graupel all day on March 29.
Who comes up with a name like graupel? The Germans, that’s who. The stuff stings and, while the World Meteorological Association refers to graupel as snow pellets encapsulated by ice, it melted on my legs pretty quickly as we rode the Lone Tree chairlift at Big Sky Resort.
But I was fine! Who knew pants this bomber existed? Ace’s 15,000 mm insulation and fully taped seams kept my legs warm. And the 60 g Primaloft One insulation on the knees and butt completed the protection.
My face? Different story. It felt like razor burn skiing down. I needed some Dakine Ace pants for my cheeks. Are those in the works?
The other cool thing was while I was hiking up the Headwaters – before the graupel storm – I got warm. You know, like when your pants start sticking to your legs. But with Ace’s mesh inner-leg vents, it was all good. My thighs could breathe. It’s always a bonus when your thighs can breathe. Plus the comfy, baggy fit makes you look like you can throw a corked 9 in the park.
Dakine is at it again, redefining ski and snowboard gear with the Ace pants. Get some!
