At the end of 2023, the Gallatin Valley Land Trust announced that they had closed a conservation easement on a 407 acre property west of Three Forks along the Jefferson River. This is the 128th property that the GVLT has secured under conservation easement, meaning that the land use is permanently limited to protect its conservation.
“We are grateful to the family who chose to forever conserve their productive agricultural land that will continue to produce grass hay, alfalfa, and sainfoin,’ GVLT stated in a press release. The wetlands, riverside features and meadows will provide habitat for wildlife in the area from moose to migratory birds, according to the release.
With this additional 407 acres, GVLT secured 13,716 total acres in conservation easements in 2023. Over the course of 33 years, GVLT has worked with 128 families to “conserve more than 65,000 acres of some of the most highly productive, scenic, and wildlife-rich lands in southwest Montana,” the release stated.
