The Gallatin Valley Earth Day organization is hosting a series of speakers leading up to their Earth Day celebration in April. On Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m., environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb will be speaking on the topic of his book “Eager: The Surprising Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter.”
The reception begins at 6 p.m. with free food and drinks, a book signing, a silent auction with products from Simms and Wild Birds Unlimited, and information tables from sponsors. The talk will begin at 7 p.m. with a discussion from the panel to follow.
In his book, Goldfarb reveals how essential beavers are in maintaining healthy environments. At the event, Goldfarb will discuss the history and biology of beavers; how they help fight drought, flooding, wildfire and climate change, and how we can coexist with this challenging but vital rodent.
After Goldfarb’s talk, local experts and ranchers from Montana and Wyoming will discuss how they are using beaver “mimicry” to restore wetlands and attract beavers to create diverse habitats for wildlife, filter pollutants from water, control flooding, help with drought and wildfires.
