Earlier this month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued a proposal that would effectively keep grizzly bears under the protection of the Endanger Species Act. Just one day before the first of a series of public comment meetings on this proposal was set to take place, all meetings were cancelled.
“In light of the recent transition and the need for this administration to review the recent grizzly bear proposed rule, the service is cancelling all four of the public meetings and hearings that the agency voluntarily scheduled on this proposal,” a note from FWS stated on their website. No further information was provided.
Grizzly bears were listed under the ESA in 1975 This new proposal was established based on an independent, peer-reviewed species assessment that tracks the recovery of grizzlies across Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming where suitable habitats exist.
