After a dominant win to start the football season on Aug. 31, Lone Peak High School hosted rival Ennis High School on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The game was tight in the opening minutes, with both teams scoreless at the end of the first quarter.
In the final minute of the second quarter, Ennis scored to take a 20-6 lead. Junior quarterback Will Helms connected with Junior Ebe Grabow for Lone Peak’s only touchdown in the first half.
In the third quarter, junior Eli Gale rushed for a Big Horn touchdown, but the Mustangs extended their lead to 42-14.
The Big Horns scored twice in the fourth quarter—Grabow returned a kick and Gale caught a touchdown pass—but couldn’t overcome the deficit. The Mustangs won, 55-26.
In a follow-up email to EBS, Lone Peak head coach Dustin Shipman wrote that the Big Horns struggled to sustain their momentum.
“Tough loss at home, it’s a long season and we have a lot to build on and learn from here,” Shipman wrote. “Ennis came out very physical and we didn’t match that, too many big plays. We certainly had some great plays, but consistency across both sides of the ball was missing and that is a key ingredient to winning games in our league.”
The Big Horns look forward to putting in work this week at practice, and hope to get back on track when they travel to Twin Bridges High School on Friday night.
