Avalanches in Idaho and Washington led to two deaths and one injury over the weekend.
On March 1, at about 1:30 p.m. law enforcement answered a call alerting the police to a possible avalanche fatality in the Pack River area of the Selkirk Mountains in northern Idaho. According to a release from Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the Boundary County Sheriff’s office and Boundary County Search and Rescue operations concluded as of March 2.
The body recovery mission is ongoing, but high avalanche danger and winter weather have delayed progress. As soon as conditions improve, the mission will resume, according to the release.
“Due to the ongoing nature of this mission and the safety of those involved, we’re asking the public to stay out of the Fault Lake trail area,” the release stated. The release ended with a note, expressing sympathies for friends and family of the deceased.
Another avalanche on March 1 led to a fatality near the Cascade Mountains’ Darland Mountain in the Ahtanum Meadows area. According to a CAIC release, two snowmobilers were involved in the slide, which occurred at 6,600 feet in an east-facing bowl.
“One rider was fully buried and killed,” the release stated. The Northwest Avalanche Center visited the accident site on March 2, and shared their condolences with friends and family.
