Choose your own adventure

Stories from Ophir fourth grade

This quarter, Ophir Elementary School teacher Jeremy Harder challenged his fourth grade students to write “choose your own adventure” stories, where readers assume the role as protagonist, and decide where they want the tale to go.

Harder chose six of the stories to be featured on explorebigsky.com. EBS will run two stories each week for the next three weeks to showcase these students’ talents.

This assignment was based on the “choose your own adventure” books we read as kids, and I couldn’t find student examples on the Internet, so I thought it would be cool for my students to use their creativity and writing skills to create some that we could share.

We developed plans, began writing and collaborating on drafts, read them aloud to each other, and made edits where necessary. Then we shared them with second and third graders for their reading practice and pleasure.

They came out awesome. The projects were super creative, fun to read and innovative for elementary students to meet the rather challenging organizational process of building two or more stories within one story.

This week, EBS is featuring “Choose your own adventure” stories written by fourth graders Chloe Unger and Logan Barker.
