A car carrying five people plunged off the road and into the Semi-Centennial Geyser thermal feature in Yellowstone National Park on Thursday, July 11.
According to a July 12 press release from the park, all five occupants escaped the car on their own with non-life-threatening injuries, but the vehicle was fully submerged in about nine feet of the geyser’s acidic, near-105F water.
All occupants were all taken to a nearby hospital to be treated, and it took a collective effort of Hanser’s Automotive, the U.S. Water Rescue Dive Team, HK Contractors, Resource Technologies Incorporated and Yellowstone Park Service Stations to lift the gray SUV from the inactive geyser’s depths.
The incident occurred between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction in the park, and the roadway was closed for about two hours while the recovery team retrieved the vehicle. Park officials did not release the names of those involved, and say the incident is under investigation.
