Big Sky Resort to open 1,200 acres, Challenger lift on Opening Day

After generally dry and warm weather throughout September and October, numerous snowstorms in November have enabled Big Sky Resort to open 50 trails when it begins its 51st winter season on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
A press release from the resort stated that 47 inches of snow—180% of the monthly average—and “exceptional” snowmaking conditions will mean Big Sky has one of the largest terrain openings in North America, with 1,242 acres including two terrain parks, five surface lifts and four chairlifts: Swift Current 6, Ramcharger 8, Explorer and Challenger.
The Lone Peak Tram will also be open for scenic rides.
“Since the temperatures dropped, the snowmaking team has been making the most of every weather window,” Tom Marshall, general manager of mountain experience, stated in the release. “With a solid natural base plus the efforts of our team, we’re looking forward to a relatively wall-to-wall opening among our open lifts, with more terrain being assessed by patrol daily.”
The resort reported another six inches of snow on Sunday, Nov. 24, after the press release was sent. When more terrain opens, announcements can be found on Big Sky Resort’s trail status page.
Opening Day festivities include complimentary breakfast treats and coffee, and beer tastings from MAP Brewing paired with a live DJ in the afternoon.
