Special Olympics Montana will host its 16th annual Big Sky Area Winter Games Competition on Monday, March 3 at Big Sky Resort’s Madison Base Area.
The competition will include alpine giant slalom, snowshoe and Nordic skiing, featuring local, regional and statewide athletes. Organizers are still looking to fill a few volunteer roles for the event, according to a press release from Special Olympics Montana, a statewide nonprofit offering year-round sports training, athletic competition and health-related programming for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
“The impact that any of our Special Olympics events have on athletes and their families is far reaching,” stated Sherry Rudolph, outreach senior director, in a statement emailed to EBS. “Our committed volunteers provide year-round sports programming, activities and events for individuals with intellectual disabilities ages 8 to 88 years. What I get to see is the pride of parents and loved ones faces seeing their athlete accomplish a goal or simply being seen in the world. Their team becomes their extended family and gives them a place that they can truly belong. When we connect new athletes to our Big Sky area teams, their families begin to prioritize their lives around Special Olympics events because they are so meaningful to the athletes.”

The release added gratitude for the event host. “Big Sky Resort has graciously hosted the competition every year and we thank them for welcoming our amazing athletes back for 2025.” The event will emceed by Miss O’Malley, and spectators are welcome to attend to support the athletes.
