CLYDE PARK/BIG SKY – The Big Horns traveled to Shields Valley High School on Jan. 2
and sustained a frustrating 20 point loss, 67-47. The team created plenty of chances
throughout the game, but had a tough time getting the ball through the iron.
“We worked incredibly hard during the game, but couldn’t get the shots to go
down,” said Head Coach Al Malinowski. “I thought we outworked [Shields Valley],
but it was a matter of not finishing.”
The Big Horns are playing at a faster pace this year, working to push the ball up the
court and be more aggressive.
“It’s like skiing a harder run,” Malinowski said. “There are going to be growing pains,
but I liked how we stayed committed to it. [The aggressive play] really started to
carry over to the Sheridan game, where pushing the ball resulted in points.”
The fast pace back home in Big Sky paid off with numerous layup opportunities
versus Sheridan on Jan. 4, as the Big Horns won handily 64-39. Bench play was
important as both teams reached the double bonus in each half. Freshman Eddie
Starz led the way with 15 points, the fourth leading scorer for the Big Horns in as
many district games.
“This is how I want our guys to play,” Malinowski said. “I want them to distribute the
ball to whoever has the hot hand. Finding that guy and taking advantage of the
opportunities makes a much stronger group as a whole.”
The Big Horns play at Gardiner Friday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m., and are on their home
court versus Twin Bridges at 1 p.m. Saturday. Both teams were in the district finals
last year, so this weekend should be a good measuring stick for the boys, according
to Malinowski.
