The second season in high school academic competition has come to end for Lone Peak High School students. This year students, along with their adviser Ms. Zirbel, attended two competitions in Montana, one at the University of Montana-Missoula, and a second at Montana State University-Bozeman.
Their performance this year was outstanding both in their rankings and in their admirable sportsmanship.
The LPHS Big Horns made a debut at the Academic World Quest presented by the Montana Affairs Council. A team of four students, Gabby Michel, Ben Michel, Micah Robin, and Joe McGough, traveled with Ms. Zirbel to the University of Montana-Missoula for the one-day event.
The morning sessions included a foreign film discussion by UM professor Udo Fluck, followed by an engaging speech and discussion with retired U.S. Ambassador Mark Johnson about the importance of student participation in the global community.
The latter half of the day was marked by two separate competitive events. First, LPHS students were placed into mixed school groups and asked to create a solution to an international problem. The event ended when one team’s solution from each side of the issue was selected as the best. Both Gabby Michel and Micah Robin won for best solution.
Next, the Big Horn team used their extensive knowledge of international affairs to compete in 10 rounds of 10 questions in each quiz game. Although they didn’t win the first place prize trip to Washington D.C., the Big Sky team finished well above average.
In their second competition this year, three LPHS team attended the Academic Olympics at MSU, competing against schools from around the state. The one-day event challenges students to answer academic-based questions in a team jeopardy-style format. Each team was composed of five students with one or more persons from the ninth, 10th and 11th grades.
There were a total of 16 rounds, and LPHS teams made it to the 10th, ninth and 7th rounds. Academic Olympics attendees included: Bianca Godoy, Bella Butler, Eddie Starz, Soby Haarman, Charlie Johnson, Jonathan Dearth, Rachid Shultz, Quinn House, Joe McGough, Trevor House, Gabrielle Gasser, Simeon Goode and Ben Michel.
