On March 1, 2024, Custer Gallatin National Forest reinstated its food storage regulations for five ranger districts until Dec. 1. Bozeman, Hebgen Lake, Gardiner, Yellowstone and Beartooth sections of the national forest will require proper bear-safe storage of food, according to a Feb. 27 release

The measure requires visitors to store unattended food, garbage and attractants in hard-sided vehicles or enclosed trailers, bear-resistant containers or suspended at least 10 feet above ground and four feet from nearby trees and poles.

According to the release, those who do not comply with the food storage requirements can be issued a violation and held civilly liable for any damages that occur. Custer Gallatin National Forest also provided resources on outdoor safety and ethics for recreationists.
