Ophir fifth graders propose bike park

This year, one of the fifth grade service learning projects revolves around an effort to build a bike park for the Big Sky community.

The term bike park also known as a “pump track” consists of a network of continuous loops that can be ridden without pedaling. The track relies upon a series of rolling bumps (rollers) and banked corners (berms) that allow the rider to gain momentum eliminating the need to pedal. Pump tracks were originally developed by BMX riders wanting to improve their skill set and overall fun on a bike, but it has now turned into a fun activity for anyone who can ride a bike.

Anyone who can ride a bike could use the park: Pre-K children just learning, Ophir and Lone Peak High students, adult cyclists and tourists.

The fifth grade class is sending out an online survey to every parent in Big Sky, as well as every student (grades 3-12). They will use this data to create graphs representing community interest to help in the effort to build this community Bike Park.
